The Salvation Army in Northeast Ohio Celebrates National Donut Day

Jun 4, 2026

Cleveland, OH (June 5th, 2026) National Donut Day, the world's sweetest holiday, was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army. This day not only offers a delightful reason to visit your favorite local bakery but also stands as a testament to the bravery of The Salvation Army’s Donut Lassies. These courageous women stood shoulder to shoulder with soldiers on the front lines during World War I, providing them with a taste of home and a much-needed morale boost.

In 1917, The Salvation Army volunteers traveled to France and set up makeshift huts to provide soldiers with essential supplies, emotional and spiritual support, and freshly fried donuts. The sweet treat did more than lift spirits; it brought comfort and a taste of home to those who risked their lives.

Today, The Salvation Army continues to be a shining beacon of hope in our local communities. Their wide-ranging programs and services, which include spiritual, emotional, and financial support, make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals and families in need. In Northeast Ohio, their influence is strongly recognized, highlighting their steadfast dedication to helping neighbors.

“Over the past 161 years, The Salvation Army has provided hope and help to those in need across the country, serving as the nation’s largest private provider of social services,” said Major Tricia Brennen, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in Northeast Ohio. “Today, Donut Day is a tradition that celebrates the work of the original Donut Lassies by delivering donuts and emotional and spiritual care to those in need.”

This Friday, June 5th, The Salvation Army in Northeast Ohio will mark National Donut Day in a special way. In collaboration with Giant Eagle, the organization will honor the Donut Lassies' rich history by hosting a series of events across Ohio and Pennsylvania. In a generous gesture, Giant Eagle will provide donuts for these events and sell them at its stores for $6.00 per dozen, further spreading the joy of National Donut Day.
