The Time of Their Lives
Sophia and Sarah, adorable 8-year-old twins, never thought they’d get a chance to go to summer camp. As the children of a single mother struggling to make ends meet, they believed it could never happen for them.
But when their mom heard that The Salvation Army makes it possible for kids to attend camp at no cost to their family, they signed up . . . and had the time of their lives.
Sophia and Sarah say they especially enjoy swimming, hobbies, and crafts. “Our counselors help us have fun, and we make a lot of friends,” says Sophia.
They also learn about life’s lasting things, like the importance of building strong, lasting relationships and respecting others.

For some children, camp gives them an opportunity to experience things most of us take for granted. “You mean I get three meals a day?” one child asked. Another was surprised to learn that she didn’t have to share her bed with another person.
“Summer camp is a good place for kids to be,” says Sophia’s and Sarah’s mother, Joann. “A positive, safe place. As a single parent on a fixed income, this really helps me. And it gives them the opportunity to have fun, to interact, to learn, and to do things they wouldn’t normally be able to do.”
Sarah puts it a little more simply: “We love coming to Salvation Army summer camp!”
