Too Proud to Seek Help

Vicki wouldn’t ask for assistance, but thanks to friends like you, she got what she needed.

Vicki, a 40-year-old single mother, lives with her two children in a dilapidated trailer.

Her children’s father abandoned them a few years ago, and Vicki can hardly provide for her family, barely keeping up with utility and grocery bills. Over the summer, they lived outside in tents for a while, because they had no electricity or running water.

But Vicki is too proud to ask for help. When asked if she needs anything, she always says, “Someone else needs the help more than I do.”

Smiles and Tears

One day, one of Vicki’s neighbors called the Army: Vicki’s electricity was about to be shut off because she couldn’t pay her bill. It took much persuading to get Vicki to accept the Army’s help, but she finally gave in. The Army made a small payment on her behalf, and the power company agreed to grant Vicki an extension — and keep her power on.

Vicki was all smiles and tears when she heard the good news.
